I was inspired by Mary Ellen Mark's use of black and white imagery to convey deeper meanings within her work. While photographing subjects, the use of black and white creates cohesiveness within her work. In the future, I would like to be more purposeful with my use of black and white imagery. For example, experimenting with lighter and darker lightings and also with shadows. I feel like in the past, I have used black and white imagery for aesthetic purposes but I think it can be used to convey meanings in images.

“I found your presentation to be very informative. The reasoning for the choices of images was well-explained and descriptions of the images were detailed. I think it is very interesting how Sam Taylor Woods uses commonly known subjects to highlight in her work. Using celebrities draws viewers into her work but her composition choices allows the viewers to see the subject through a new perspective. I found the "Crying Men" series of images to be particularly successful in portraying celebrities in a new light.”

Your presentation on Mary Ellen Mark was excellent! I appreciated how you discussed her focus on often-overlooked subjects and how her use of black-and-white photography and lighting sets the emotional tone of her work. You also did a great job explaining the balance between her interpretive and visually striking images. Learning about her has made me see photography as a powerful tool for social commentary, and it’s inspired me to think more about the deeper stories and emotions I want to capture in my own work.
